NY Jets football field cake

You realize exactly how much you can do when you find yourself working under a tight deadline.

Barely into the new year, I accepted the challenge to create a birthday cake for a NY Jets fan (Max) and 50 of his closest friends and deliver it...all within a 15 hour window! I knew I could make it happen, and really wanted to, as this family is one of my favorite clients. I created a vanilla cake with blackberry buttercream filling, iced in vanilla buttercream, and accented in chocolate ganache. All the field details were drawn in chocolate ganache. The birthday boy was thrilled with his cake - especially the chocolate NY Jets logo on the 50 yardline, and his friends were impressed that it was not only delicious, but all-natural!

Max's mother, Lisa, is passionate about all-natural and gourmet foods and eschews artificial color, just as I do. Her husband, Martin, is a chef and obviously is also passionate about great food. It's always a treat to bake for fellow foodies! As a result, every time I do a cake for them, both the planning and the implementation are a delight. It was very important to Lisa to be able to have something to delight her son and show his friends that an amazing birthday cake could be done, deliciously, with all real gourmet ingredients. (Whenever Max has friends over, Lisa prides herself on serving only healthy snacks, and showing the kids that food can be good for them AND be really, really tasty - it's an ongoing passion to educate and pass on great life-long habits to others. So Max's cake was an extension of that passion.) Knowing the whole family and all of Max's guests loved the cake absolutely delighted me.

The post-script: next time I make this cake, I'll have time to finish my vision for it, which would be to add all of the numerical yardage markers, 3-D chocolate goal posts, chocolate ganache end zones, and more.

Next up: a Superbowl 43 cake! We'll soon know which teams' names will be in the chocolate end zones!
